On September 25, 2024, Raphael Varane officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. Having enjoyed a stellar career, the French World Cup-winning defender leaves the sport after a brief stint with Italian club Como 1907. Despite retiring from the pitch, Varane revealed his plans to remain with the club in a non-playing role to support Como’s future ambitions.
Reflecting on a Remarkable Journey
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Varane expressed deep gratitude as he looked back on his extraordinary career. He reflected on the challenges, the highs and lows, and the unforgettable memories that shaped his footballing life. "They say all good things must come to an end," Varane began. "Throughout my career, I faced countless challenges, overcame obstacles, and rose above many situations that seemed impossible. Now, with immense pride and satisfaction, I am announcing my retirement from the game we all love."
A Final Exit on His Terms
Varane's decision to step away from football was driven by his commitment to maintaining high personal standards. He emphasized the importance of leaving the game on a strong note rather than clinging on for too long. "I have always set the highest standards for myself. I wanted to exit the sport on my terms, not just hold on. It takes great courage to listen to your heart and instincts. Desire and need are two different things," he explained.
Varane highlighted his resilience, mentioning that he had faced and overcome countless challenges in his career. However, he now felt it was the right time to hang up his boots. "I have fallen and risen thousands of times, but this time, it’s time to stop. I leave the game after my last match, a trophy win at Wembley."
Injury Brings Early End to Como Career
Varane’s retirement was hastened by an injury sustained during his debut match for Como 1907. In August 2024, during a Coppa Italia fixture against Sampdoria, Varane only managed to play for 23 minutes before suffering a thigh injury. The muscle strain kept him out of action, and after further setbacks, Varane made the tough decision to retire. The injury left him out of Como’s Serie A squad for the season, and ultimately led him to hang up his boots.
Staying with Como 1907 in a New Role
Although his playing days are over, Varane is not leaving Como 1907 entirely. The 2018 World Cup champion remains committed to helping the club off the pitch. "A new chapter begins off the field. I will remain with Como, but without my boots and shin pads. I look forward to sharing more about this soon."
His continued presence at Como 1907 demonstrates his loyalty to the club and his desire to contribute to its growth, even after his retirement. Varane’s leadership and experience will undoubtedly benefit the Italian side as they aim for success in the future.
Gratitude and Farewell to Football
In his closing remarks, Varane expressed his deep appreciation for the support he received throughout his career. He gave special thanks to the clubs, teammates, coaches, and fans who made his football journey so remarkable. "To the supporters of every club I played for, to my teammates, coaches, and staff—thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this journey more special than I could have ever imagined. Thank you, football."
Varane’s retirement marks the end of an era for one of football’s most talented defenders. As he transitions into life after football, his contributions to the game will not be forgotten, and his next steps at Como 1907 are eagerly awaited.
